Companion Nutrients: The Key to Success on the Iodine Protocol

It all stems from the Wolff Chaikoff Effect that was later retracted but few knew about it because it was hidden in a later scientific publication. The follow up article did not get as much attention as the first article. Bromide is a toxic halide that competes with the absorption of iodine in the body.

These unrefined salts help our body safely detoxify from these halides, allowing iodine a chance to get in and do its job. I’ll be honest with you, it has been a very slow process, and in fact, it’s still going. Two years since first discovering I had a 100% blockage (thru a simple urine test with my holistic practitioner) I have been doing what is called “Salt Loading”. My lastest test, in February of this year, showed that my body is now only 53% blocked. A great result from where I started, but still nowhere near good enough, especially for someone with Hashimoto’s. Imo, salt loading should be reserved for bromine detox symptoms.

The Compton bromide detox and San Pedro facilities, however, do not have the same air quality controls in place. This month, the average monthly concentrations were the third highest since the state air board started monitoring in 2023. AG Fume and Harbor Fumigation, located at the same address in San Pedro, collectively used nearly 40,000 pounds of methyl bromide in 2022, according to the data. That’s seven to eight times more than the two businesses in West Long Beach. The facility is near San Pedro’s 22nd Street Park and neighborhoods to the west.

So what is Salt Loading?

There is a good chance a lot of our current thyroid hormones have been created with bromine instead of iodine. Keep in mind that we’re made of trillions of cells and every single one depends on thyroid hormones ..which are potentially made of bromine at this point. This could explain why some of us seem to push bromine out forever and have lingering bromine symptoms no matter what we do. In 2024, the county commissioner imposed new permit conditions on the two west Long Beach facilities to reduce exposure. Included are closing doors and ventilating fumes higher in the air so it won’t be disbursed in high concentrations at ground level.

Spokesperson Michael de los Reyes declined to answer additional questions. Air quality officials told residents at Thursday’s community meeting that the West Long Beach school is not within the area that could experience health effects, although 50 homes are. Global Pest Management’s Compton facility is near the 710 Freeway, with residential neighborhoods on both sides. It used 11,626 pounds of methyl bromide in 2022, more than double what volumes used at the West Long Beach facilities, according to data provided by the South Coast district at the meeting on Thursday.

Common bromide toxicity symptoms

Iodine/iodide allergic people can usually be treated using the NeuroModulation Technique. If you do not feel any side effects (see below) increase your dosage by taking up to 3 drops (3.75mg) per day prior to taking larger dosage of approximately 12.5mg to 50mg per day. The following list is a compilation of the potential symptoms of detox that may be experienced when first taking iodine. The South Coast district provided information about the four facilities on Thursday after residents had earlier expressed concerns about whether more businesses use the fumigant.

How are we exposed to bromine?

Iodine supplementation of 12 to 50 mg per day is adequate for most patients. One of the most common questions and misconceptions is on the topic of an iodine overload vs a detox symptom from iodine pushing out toxic halides. The root of the issue is a mass misunderstanding of iodine in general. There is a fear that runs rampant – especially in the medical community.

Historically bromide has been used in products that were sedatives and anti-convulsants. They were sold under names like Bromo-Seltzer and Dr Miles’ Nervine. Nervine is the name of a plant that had a positive impact on the nervous system, however the main ingredient in this product was bromide. This product as well as Bromo-seltzer (removed from the market in 1975) were touted as safe and effective ways to calm nerves and handle headaches. The issue with both products is that over consumption could lead to bromism which creates abnormal conditions with psychiatric, neurological, gastrointestinal, and dermatological symptoms.

  • Testing involves collecting urine immediately upon rising in the morning to use in what is called a spot test.
  • The following chart outlines the nutrients required by each phase to function at optimum levelsas well as some supporting nutrients to assist the process.

How to prepare a Salt Load

Greg Augustine, owner of Harbor Fumigation, said his business in San Pedro is permitted and complies with local, state and federal requirements. He said he will be cooperating with air quality regulators if they request more information about his operation. Bromine is taking the place of iodine as we’ve been exposed to more bromine than iodine. One we get enough iodine to push the bromine out, it can find its way out in various ways depending how our body’s chemistry is currently running. Most people, if they do have an iodine allergy, are allergic to the iodine in radiological contrast dyes, not inorganic iodine or iodide, like in supplements.

  • The two West Long Beach facilities — AG Fume Service and San Pedro Forklift, also known as SPF Logistics — are just a few hundred feet away from homes and Elizabeth Hudson Elementary School.

  • Iodine experts will state that to succeed on iodine supplementation, it’s recommended to prepare with companion nutrients to help counter the detox that iodine can cause.
  • But, I am likely keeping most of my bromine symptoms away by consuming enough salt with food and going slow with iodine.

But, I am likely keeping most of my bromine symptoms away by consuming enough salt with food and going slow with iodine. In West Long Beach, California Air Resources Board monitors detected spikes of methyl bromide as high as 983 and 966 parts per billion in February and March of 2024. At 1,000 ppb, methyl bromide can cause acute health effects, such as nausea and dizziness, air quality officials said. For safety, we recommend that you have a spot iodine urine test done, even if you and your healthcare professionals think you have a perfectly healthy thyroid function. And, of course, if you have any doubt of your thyroid’s state of health, it is imperative you do the spot test before any supplementation with iodine.

Bioidentical Hormones Natural Thyroid

With iodine deficiency running rampant, it is imperative to have a clear understanding of iodine supplementation before you start taking iodine. Most people are so contaminated with bromide (bromine in oxidation state), fluoride, and chlorine that they need help from high doses of iodine these days. Relieves side effects that can result from bromide detox such as headache, acne, fatigue, etc. Therefore, if you are already hypothyroid, taking selenium supplements while iodine deficient will make you MORE HYPOTHYROID. So every single day for 1 month, I dissolved 1 teaspoon of Himalayan rock salt into 1 litre of filtered water and drank it throughout the day.

This makes the toxin water soluble so that it can be excreted easily from the body through the water containing fluids like bile or urine. Then I drink the salt and fill the jar up to 12-16oz of plain water and drink that right away. Sometimes I notice my brain fog clear within seconds, sometimes I feel it slowly help. There is some information about electrolytes damaging liver and kidney cells in order to increase hydration. 2 What’s happening here is actually beneficial to some degree because it’s increasing our ability to hydrate.

I have had a handful of people reach out to me from either the emergency room or with paramedics at their home due to a major electrolyte imbalance that caused them to have a reaction. Every time this happened except one time, it was most likely due to people drinking salt water at least once per day for a week or more. Sustained overconsumption of sodium, particularly as salt, has been related to development of hypertension in sensitive individuals. 1 When we add salt to our food, most of it will be absorbed in our gut, which can limit how much it want’s to absorb and pass the rest. But when we drink salt water, most of it will be absorbed into our blood stream just about instantly where it is essentially forced though our organs.

Today’s blog will address the issues we are facing with bromide toxicity. If you haven’t read the previous blogs on Iodine please go back and read through them so that you have a clear understanding of the big picture. Firstly, your salt of choice is very important – it needs to be unrefined. I personally use Himalayan rock salt, however Celtic sea salt is also a great choice.

I’m not sure how, but it seems like constant salt loading reduces our ability to bind bromine and remove it, which is the exact reason we’re using salt loading in the first place. If you take a close look at this list you will notice that the majority of the detox symptoms also mimic the list of iodine toxicity. The curious thing about this is that when the detox pathways are supported and salt water is consumed (the antidote to bromide toxicity), the symptoms on this list tend disappear signifying that it was not iodine toxicity. Many a person has reported that their doctors tried to scare them into stopping when complaining about these symptoms. Long Beach residents near companies that use methyl bromide are angry that air quality officials didn’t notify them for years and haven’t assessed their health risks.
